About Mashelle Baker
Growing up on a hog farm with a seemingly endless garden, I learned from an early age the importance of growing and raising our own food. My parents ingrained in me the value of eating well, a lesson that was further reinforced during my time in 4-H, where I showed steers and learned the intricacies of feeding and finishing beef.
My first job as an LPN opened my eyes to the critical connection between taking care of our bodies and maintaining long-term health and self-sufficiency. After working in a nursing home for two years, I knew I wanted a career in healthcare. However, with a long wait for the RN program in my small town, I pursued a degree in Early Childhood Education, thinking I might become a PE teacher.
Instead, I found my calling in home visitation, working with pregnant women and following their children's development until they turned three. This role taught me about the importance of dental hygiene, well-child checks, vaccinations, and overall health. Over time, I became a Child Development Specialist with Presbyterian Medical Services, staying for about 13 years in various roles. During this period, I earned a social work degree and developed a deep interest in mental health and the parent-child relationship, which led me to explore cell health and prenatal development.
A move to Grants, NM, a smaller town with limited educational opportunities, led me to work at a coal mine. A year later, I discovered online classes at the University of New Mexico and pursued a degree in Pathology while continuing my job at the mine. For four years, I studied cells, tissues, diseased tissues, and autopsy findings, learning how lifestyle choices impact aging and disease.
After completing my degree, I worked in the lab at the University of New Mexico Hospital, where I was disheartened by the prevalence of chronic illness and over-reliance on medication. This experience sparked my interest in Functional Medicine, which focuses on the body's innate ability to heal itself with the right support and clinical supplementation.
For the past seven years, I have dedicated myself to becoming a Functional Medicine Practitioner. At my practice, we develop personalized treatment plans to help reverse obesity, autoimmune diseases, mold illness, hormone imbalances, and chronic health conditions. We specialize in identifying healing opportunities through environmental and lifestyle factors, supported by advanced lab testing to optimize health.
